What's Happening in the Doll World?

Three entertaining, artistic, and useful sites...all by one person, April!
All about fashion dolls...
Tyra, Stella, Gunilla...16" Fashion Dolls and a CITY of 12" Barbies!
There's Baby Phats, Fashion Royalty, Kens, fashionable Barbie Basics...and more!
And all of April's fashion dolls are very busy modeling the wardrobes created by April herself!
April is winding down a varied career in the Fashion Industry, from modeling, drawing and pattern drafting to journalism, to consulting...and now dressing Barbie dolls in REAL fashion.
April has three blog sites...one written by the dolls themselves, which reads like a reality TV novel, Fashion Doll Diva
Very entertaining!
She also has a spin off for her beautiful 16" Fashion Dolls,
And her main site Fashion Doll Stylist.
April often superimposes her girls (and guys) against the runways of New York, London, Milan...but especially Paris, where she resides most of the time. Or at least she did. Now she spends more time back in the States.
But her DOLLS, at least a few of them, continue to inhabit a fashionable little apartment near the Seine. And April has left them enough clothes to go out shopping in the day, and have fun in the Paris nightlife. Really!
April is a master fashion doll dressmaker. On her main blog, Fashion Doll Stylist, now in its fourth year, she covers the main fashion shows, attends expos like the Barbie exhibition with over 700 Barbies at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, and events like the Cannes Film Festival.
But an important part of her blog are the tutorials teaching everything from making slopers, to peasant blouses, to draped leather coats. And in her latest blog post..."Easy Straw Hats"!
I work fast, taking photos and creating stories, and posting to my site and my social media. At least I thought I was fast until I did my best for a while to keep up to April's output. And I just dress my dolls in the clothes that others make. April's dolls are dressed from scratch, in fresh fashions, and you can find her on Twitter, Instagram, and Doll Observer, as well as her own 3 sites. And those are just the places I have tracked her. She enters contests and judges others' dolls fashions....
I am beginning to think that her dolls are doing some of this work. I know that might sound funny to some of you.
But I am thinking of getting MORE advice from April, who has been kind enough to answer my novice questions in several areas.
I am going to ask her how she trained her dolls to post for her on Instagram and Twitter as well as their own blog. (Trained? or persuaded? or allowed?)
Maybe I can send a couple of my bright dolls to apprentice under April's talented girls.
Maybe when they return, we can start our Dolltown Agency...in the works!
If you haven't been to one of April's sites, go visit!
Even my dollies like to hang out on her sites, vogueing and insinuating themselves into April's photos!
One night I put up her Barbie Exhibition post on our big TV and G and I watched it like a movie. Fun!
I want to tell you more, about April dolls' celebration of World Doll Day, their Christmas and New Year's Parties, and the beautiful cream grand piano that some of her well dressed dolls are lucky enough to be displayed on.
But really! I have to get my thoughts back to Dolltown and tell you about Lula, who is still traveling and living in Australia!

Lani sent a great batch that we received in May, on Mother's Day!
Little Darling Lula now lives in Melbourne with Lani, my daughter...but she has also traveled to Tasmania, Indonesia, and New Zealand over the last months!
And we have posted the photos of her adventures this week...beaches, rivers, mountains, and Lula's new Maori family of dolls!
Warning! Some of Lani's photos of Lula are so big they may not load instantly on some devices.
As soon as this newsletter is done, I am off to learn more, again, about photos, sizes, megabyte's, pixels...

I can't wait to show you the surprise that arrived in the mail from Pachom this week!
The photos are not ready yet!
But here is a photo of Tink and Xenniatalking about our new outfit coming from Maggie and Kate Create.
That got them hunting for baby frogs in the garden!
What is the link between a new outfit and frogs?
Here we see a cute T-shirt flowered dress on Tink from tkctcrafts on eBay, and a sweet full skirted polka dot dress on Xennia from prairiemoondesigns.

But super cute anyway! Boy's clothes. Hahahaha
These guys are just satisfied to be dressed, with shoes..
Actually what you can't see...Badger, in the red Pachom T-shirt, actually has no shoes on! I strategically placed Bobby, and the ball, in front of Badger's bare feet so no one will notice.
Afterwards I asked him...why are you way out here on the Path with NO SHOES? He just smiled at me...
I hope we haven't lost that button that's missing on Owen's cardigan!

Here I am, still hanging out with Ballet Doll, my new friend!
This week we got to see all the photos from Lula in Australia...and Indonesia and New Zealand!
I thought it was funny to see Lula with a sick bag on the plane to Indonesia! (Sorry Lula!)
Turbulence, Lula? We know you are not afraid of heights from all your photos hanging off ledges, branches, and bridges...
Even in your Christmas photo, you are hanging from a decorated tree branch!
So, what happened? Were you eating fries before the flight? Too much jumping up and down from excitement? Or was it just a bumpy ride on the clouds we can see in the photo?
Well, you must have felt better when you got there...camping, swimming, climbing!
But your photos got two little dollies in trouble here. They've been hanging from trees and getting stuck. You-Know-Who has had to get Conner and Evie to spy on them, keep them OUT of trouble!
Ballet Doll and I had a good laugh over that!
We are ALL excited in Dolltown, because the Little Darlings are expecting a shorts outfit from the well-known Maggie and Kate Create.
Here's their Flickr page if you haven't seen their adorable and colorful creations...
Hey, and you can see the outfit on its way here, the one with a frog!
I wouldn't wear it! Don't bring any frogs around me!
But I wouldn't turn down one of their red and black outfits! Hmmhmmm.
I know I am a little big....
What's next, coming up next week we hope?
  • Conner and Evie on a reconnaissance mission-keep an eye on Tink and Xennia! In camouflage! They love it!
  • The Ellowynes out and about, cute photos of those girls...
  • And Awards are STILL on our minds...
We'll see!

World Doll Day! June 11...
During the past week, dolls all over the world celebrated their own special day.
World Doll Day was started 30 years ago...
It was created to spread the universal message of happiness and love.

From Days of the Year...

World Doll Day was established on June 14, 1986 by a lovely lady named Mildred Seeley, to celebrate not only dolls, but caring, nurturing love and the people offering it, in general. This day is symbolised by Boots Tyner’s logo depicting a child holding a bisque doll, as a symbol of the significance of dolls in early childhood for both girls and boys.

The day is traditionally celebrated by giving a doll to someone, anyone, child or adult, but whichever way you want to proceed with the festivities is up to you.

Read the letter written by Mildred Seeley herself, that began this event 30 years ago, on the Hiya Dolly Home Page...

Here's Quinn in a cute soft cotton Tonner Ellowyne outfit.
The Ellowyne girls have fantastic clothes. The Tonner company creates good quality fun and beautiful full outfits. There are also excellent dressmakers out there making clothes for these pretty dolls.
I usually take the outfits apart, and use them as separates. The girls have worn parts of this outfit before.
In our photo shoot this week, and next, you will see both Tonner and dressmaker clothes.
Check out the cute jackets! Blazer styles, bomber, satin, denim!
And the Ellowyne shoes are so much fun! All the girls but Noddy wear high heels, from basic pumps to this patent, strappy, two toned pair here on Quinn...

Well, last week was fun!
I got my first kiss! Well, it was just pretend with a big Paul Brandt poster!
(I wonder how many girls have taken a selfie pretending they are kissing a handsome dude on a poster!)
But this week tops it!  I got a new friend!
You-Know-Who came home from a Ballet Recital this week with Ballet Doll. Of course! She was made by a ballet mom right in town here. She has toe shoes made of pink satin ribbon. Nice!
And I am happy to report that You-Know-Who found the Ellowyne girls' shoes!
And where were they?
Right beside the photo shoot setting, ready. How organized!
So the photo shoot was on! Several actually, so I was called into action to help the Ellowynes choose the shoes to match their outfits.
And we decided to take photos of the girls meeting up to plan their Pop Up Shop.
Some of the local Ellowyne girls met in the afternoon....
But there was also an evening meet up at the Cafe for several of the Ellowynes who couldn't make it earlier. And the Tonner guys were invited. They were more than happy to jump into the planning, flexing their muscles and offering to move heavy stuff. And then asking the girls if they wanted to share a bottle of wine...
I heard them!

Image
Earlier, Vikka helped set the scene at the Outdoor Cafe. Thanks Vikka!
And Valentine, our doll stylist, was on hand to match outfits to eyes. But will he find a way to help our Ellowyne elder, Yelena, camouflage her black-stained legs?
You-Know-Who has to get back on line to find a solution besides leggings. Yelena is a stockings kind of girl.
Bring out the stockings, even in summer!
Check back next week to see what happens!

Our bjd Iplehouse girls each have a dress from another time...
These dresses are either from Iplehouse itself, like the pink one on Mercy on the Gallery page
Or from eBay sources selling clothes for 1/4 scale dolls, like this dress in the photo (and on our blog post this week).
And the black one on our Violet...
It doesn't always work out when buying clothes for "any" 1/4 (45cm or 17") bjd...
The bodies of these bjd's from different companies are all differently proportioned.
My Iplehouse girls are shapely, curvy, and we have had to pass on a few things to the more slender 16" Tonner Ellowyne fashion dolls.
We also special ordered a few clothes, like from Pachom Suesewan on eBay.
We have a fashion shoot on our site with clothes from Pachom.
Pachom was kind enough to work with me on dresses for my girls...
See fashion at Hiya Dolly

Image
This is one style Pachom worked out...my favorite day dress.
What else? Shoes!
The 1/4 (17") bjd girls have struggled with shoes....
...until I discovered that they wear the 50/25mm shoes that also fit my Little Darlings!
It took me months to measure the feet on these Iplehouse bjd dolls, and notice how small they are.
How great that they can share with other dolls here!
Although I now order 50/23mm or even 46-47mm for my Little Darlings.
I guess it's time to do a blog on shoes!

I bet you want to know how I got to kiss Paul Brandt!
But first...
The Tonner guys are still waiting for the Ellowyne girls to finish their photo shoot...
Because You-Know-Who has LOST the Ellowynes' shoes.
It's beyond belief.
(What's up with shoes this week?)
So, the Ellowynes are STILL getting ready for the photo shoot!
That gave You-Know-Who time to post a photo story from a while back.
It's Terra on the Path and along comes Ernie, then River Crone, and then Ernie's sister and his son. Busy path! Terra gets to drum! Lucky!
But I was lucky too! I got to tour the Country Music Capital of Canada venue downtown. I saw bronze casts of famous country singers' hands, like Hank Williams. I saw Lisa Brokop's performance outfit, from one of her shows at our old country music festival. And I got a kiss from Paul Brandt! Lucky!
Pretend! It was just his poster.
Lilac Moon, our little Berdine Creedy girl, saw a couple of cuties from her Creedy tribe this week, she said. In outfits from Maggie and Kate Create. Wow! Imagine an outfit from them!
And doll designer Berdine...love her girls! And boys, of course...
Check out her Facebook page!
And we posted a cute photo of Lilac Moon and Lula on our Instagram.
Lani sent more photos of Lula in Australia!
We'll get to them as soon as You-Know-Who finds the Ellowyne shoes.
Oh boy...
So, I'd LIKE to say that next week we WILL have our Ellowyne shoot done, and ALSO photos of Daphne's Garden, Grace's tiny buddha buddies, and Alison Austin's creative fashions on our Little Darlings. And Lula photos...
But we'll see.

What else is new in the Doll World?
Image
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the magazine I subscribe to, Dolls.
I mentioned an article by April Norton, on painting doll eyes. The article caught my attention because April studied with the Doll Dreamers Guild a couple of years ago, getting access to their videos and instructions.
The Doll Dreamers Guild was created by Dianna Effner, who sculpts and paints the Little Darlings, favorites on Hiya Dolly!
Several molds you see here in the photo are sculpts of the Little Darlings...
April began making her own dolls several years ago, using molds and firing the dolls after each layer of eye paint. "Producing the depth required for realistic painted eyes requires several layers of paint", April says in the article. It's the layers, she says, that creates the special look she loves. She is told her painted eyes are even more realistic than glass eyes.
There is something special about the Dianna Effner technique.
And April has her "own vision of the final results" she wants.
Lovely! That's what I think!
I have scanned the new edition of Dolls Magazine and I see another article on April Norton's dolls. This time it's about a new line of April's own creations, using Dianna'sLittle Darling and Big Sister molds. White porcelain and "fun outfits with a black-and-white theme". Very pretty!

Well, not this troll the girls found for sale at our Pop Up store over the weekend...
They asked to bring him home to Dolltown...but we said no way!
We have our own trolls!
Where? the girls asked.
Under our Bridge, of course...
The girls couldn't wait to get back.
So I had to run home ahead of them, quickly dig out my kids' 30 year old trolls, and tuck them under the Bridge.
(A whole family...just wait for photos!)
The girls are trying to lure them out. They are pretty shy...
That should keep the girls busy for a while.
I have an Ellowyne photo shoot to do!

Some rainy days sent us inside this week...
We helped set up a real Pop Up Store with Art and 2nd Hand...  Old Singer sewing machines and early espresso makers, old trolls and colorful birds.
And You-Know-Who set up a chart to keep track of all the doll shoe sizes needed for all of us in Dolltown. Now if only we stayed up at night, like little elves, sewing bits of leather so when she woke up in the morning there were enough shoes for everybody!
Well, at least the trolls don't need shoes!
As soon as the sun came out again the Tonner guys headed outside. They are hanging around waiting for the Ellowynes to finish a photo shoot. They figure the girls will be ready for a little rest and relaxation. If only they could figure out how to set up a hot tub. Not even the dangers of water-loosened strings in their articulated bodies would deter them, if an evening in a hot tub with the Ellowyne girls was possible...
You-Know-Who is keeping an eye on them. She would rather they weeded her vegetable garden with all that energy...
Keep an eye out this week, for the Tonner guys AND the Ellowynes, on Hiya Dolly!
Just don't expect any dolls-in-hot-tub scenes.
No hot tub book club in Dolltown!
That gets me wondering... Where are Gabby and the little dolls? Not still watching cartoons, I hope!
