A Golliwog photo challenge!
From one of my favorite dolly Facebook Groups...

Here are two Dolltown beautiesthat I photographed this week.

I am very fond of them! They have been in our family for decades...

These cloth dolls aren't true Golliwogs, like the characters portrayed in the old stories.

But they are close enough for me to keep them with the family dolls and stuffies high on shelves, and not often in our stories.

I don't want to offend anyone.

Golliwogs have fallen out of favor....

From  Wikipedia: "The golliwog, golliwogg or golly is a black fictional character created by Florence Kate Upton that appears in children's books in the late 19th century usually depicted as a type of rag doll. It was reproduced, both by commercial and hobby toy-makers as a children's toy called the "golliwog", and had great popularity in the UK and Australia into the 1970s."

Lots of us loved the stories or had cloth Golly dolls as children.

And the vintage dolls are still very popular with some doll collectors.

This past week I saw lots of cuties on the doll collectors Facebook page for the photo challenge!

And it was nice to bring these two out for photos, post them, and share the love with others.

Lula, Evie, and Scout are meeting some of the boys at the Picket Fence...
And when Badger arrives before the other boys, Scout takes a look at him and decides it's time he got another haircut.
Lula and Evie headed off to get a chair and a pair of scissors.
And right there, Badger got a hair trim that many would envy....but most would not!
But don't tell Scout I said that.
I will be in her bad books. And none of us like to be in Scout's bad books.
"Nice hair cut, Badger! Good work Scout!"

Phoebe scores!
Last week we mentioned that we were given some Monster High Dolls...and their clothes.
They are Bratz dolls and clothes! What was I thinking?
After the clothes were sorted there was a little pile for these two little dolls!
Fancy Nancy is in heaven in her flowered pants and pink sports shirt.
And...a crown!
She might never change...until we find something even fancier for her!
And Phoebe feels so grown up, in a jeans skirt!
How do they even make something that small?
Phoebe is just 8" tall...
I am impressed with these clothes!

Dolltown Goings On
Miley's Musings...

It's finally spring!
Finally more than one warm day at a time in a row!
So there was an exodus into the garden by some of our Dolltowners. The horses preened for a photo shoot and after they refused to come in!
You-Know-Who let them stay out while she went to her meetings.
And there was a flash lightning storm and a torrent of rain!
And YKW couldn't get home in time to bring them in!
That'll teach them!
They pretended that they were fine, that they loved the wild weather. But the ones with silky manes looked pretty bedraggled!
We loved the look on Phoebe's face, and Fancy Nancy's too, when they saw the tiny clothes from the Bratz dolls!
But most of them didn't fit, because they were too small!
Those Bratz dolls have torsos skinnier than my braids!
But the most fun this week was definitely Badger's haircut by Scout.
We laughed and laughed!
But not until we were out of earshot!
Scout is a little...sensitive.
And she doesn't have time for humour.
Next week...
June Little Darling! Who is it?
Let's get the Eiffel Tower Model built.
Will more Ellowynes make it to the Garden?

Customer Review by Pen Name Whether you have an antique china head doll or a vintage GI Joe, this Guide to Dolls is an identification and price guide that's worth having. It seems to replace the Blue Book of Doll Values that Jan Foulke has become known for. (Her last Blue Book was the 16th edition.)However, don't let the name of the book fool you, it is just as comprehensive as the Blue Books and is still packed with a lot of photos to help you identify your existing dolls (or those you may be considering purchasing). The first few pages cover doll collecting in general -- what to look for. Ms. Foulke then provides a few brief suggestions for buying and selling dolls at auction before getting into the meat of the book--the price guide.

The book lists dolls by manufacturer and by mold number in case that's all you have to go by. Each doll or type of doll includes a reported price or price range for a doll in good condition.

Whether you are an avid doll collector or someone just trying to clean out the attic, you may want Jan Foulke at your side before buying or selling your dolls.

Do you have a Jan Foulke's book?

I'd love to hear what you think of it and how you use it!

These clues will help you to determine what materials were used for the head, body and hair, and the category of the doll in question. The 225 photos (32 pages in full colour) and 159 illustrations will help the collector, dealer, or any interested individual to discover not only when a doll was made but also where it was made and who made it. The Makers and Marks Section includes 162 doll makers and manufacturers with information including mould numbers, sizes, manufacturing dates and references for over 1600 dolls. This book is an invaluable source for anyone who owns a doll or dreams of owning one. It is a "must have" for anyone who is curious about dolls.

 Okay, please forgive this newsletter!
Once again the sideways photo problem returned,
Once again I trust that I will find my way around the problem,
even though I have no idea why it is happening.
I am able, on my Hiya Dolly posts, to rotate the photo on the spot.

What is Happening in the Doll World?

No! Say it isn't true!
"Sad news..." We hear the Musee de la Poupee in Paris is closing down....
And we heard it from someone who just visited!
April, Fashion Doll Stylist, just took Little Darling Conner to the Doll Museum to marvel at the dolly sights...
We remember seeing photos from the famous doll museum a couple of years ago, the Dolltowners and I huddled around our laptop, checking out a blog post of April's (before we even knew her!).
Back then we had no idea that one of our own, little Conner, would travel there with April herself. And on her first outing in Paris, they headed for the doll museum to report back to us in Dolltown. Conner was impressed! So many pretty Vintages!
"I didn't know it was going to be my last visit", April said to us. April has been visiting the museum for years...
Why is it closing? I asked. "New rules regarding security measures..."
Threat of terrorism? At a Doll museum?
What is the world coming to?
Hey April! Let them know we have a nice building here...
We'd love to squeeze those Vintage Dolls into our Country Music Hall of Fame Museum!

Procrastinating!
We are building the Eiffel Tower in Dolltown! But we have been saying that for a couple of weeks now. And it's not built yet!
Oh sure, I know they say the Eiffel Tower wasn't built in a day.
But that was for the real Eiffel Tower, right?
What we have is just a model, a cardboard model.  And I have put together lots of kits of real furniture. I even built a wooden garden shed once, from a kit with instructions.
This model doesn't even need screws!
Is it the confusing tech mess I have been in for weeks?
Is it the new job I have, working 10 days straight recently, and little Dolltown time?
Is it the Little Darlings' clamoring for glitter glue on the Tower, with consequent thoughts of endless warm doll baths?
Who knows?
But I better do something I never do...and promise that it'll be done by next Dolltown.News!
So, come heck or high water, the Eiffel Tower is going up this week.
(And I'm not just saying that because the rivers have finally gone down around here. Hey, maybe that was it! The threat of actual evacuation...why build when you might abandon?)
It's time...

My favorite doll fashion is fashion I can procure without spending all our gas money. Or having to eat Saltines for a week.

Yes, we do have a couple of doll fashion pieces that required us to get by on crackers and mustard for a few days (explain that to a hungry husband!). But who wouldn't jump at a Tomi Jane tea dress when one is up for an eBay bid?
This spring we brought home these cute pieces, and more, for less than a tank of gas! I will track down the sources. I'd buy from these dressmakers again!

Miley's Musings...

Things feel almost normal again this week. Well, as normal as it's going to get for awhile....
You-Know-Who has decided she is an Art Gallery Director. And she has promised a Dolltown Art Exhibition some day...
That is two promises in one week. And that is unheard of for Y-K-W! She knows better than to make promises. She explained it to me once. She says promises are for future things, And we never know what is coming in the future. Say "I will do my best." Because that is all we can ever do, she said.
And she said it made things easier when she had children. No broken promises.
So what's up?
Has Y-K-W taken leave of her senses? Is this the beginning of early onset dementia? That is something that we dolls never go through....
But I like the thought of having a Dolltown Art Exhibition at our local Gallery! I hear they are booking only a year in advance. Time is meaningless to us dolls.
Although, we do exist in the human world, where doll owners can get forgetful and break foolish promises.
Or shut doll museums down...
Next week?
Well, Y-K-W just said the Eiffel Tower is going up! This I have to see. Report next week!
And it's time we spent time in our garden, with a few photos!
We'll see!

What is Happening in Dolltown?
Image
It's happening!

We started with the glitter, but ourspatially exceptional Zoey figured out that we can't tell which is the "outside of the Tower" , because both sides are colored on most pieces. So the glitter might just end up on the inside where no one can see it!

And so, Pearl and Zoey and friends, started taking the pieces of cardboard apart, ready to assemble.
And we discovered the pieces have a foam core. Making it sturdy...
We look forward to the next part!
And last, the glitter, when we know what's in and what's out.

Things were almost normal last week. ..
Then 6 days went by without a photo shoot!

We'll never do that again! At least I hope not.
I hope You-Know-Who has learned her lesson.
She stayed up til all hours, getting everything done today!
And there was an Eiffel Tower to build. Seriously...you'd think it was a 2000 piece puzzle! I could do it in an afternoon if anyone asked me...

Remember this?

"...I better do something I never do...and promise that it'll be done by next Dolltown.News!

So, come heck or high water, the Eiffel Tower is going up this week"

Last week YKW promised. Something she said she doesn't do. And for good reason, it seems. "I'll do my best." is what she usually says. And this week her best meant the Eiffel Tower was NOT built.

But wait! The base of the Tower is done! It's just a matter of time! I hope...

We did spend time in our garden, and we took a few photos! With the three Iplehouse BJD girls. Raven, Odelle, and Aira.

And YKW has a few more photos to post. And coming up are a few 10 second videos of the girls (how long can you video a doll, right?).

Next week:
Hopefully more doll photos and stories!
It's Dolltown, after all!

Pop over to Dolltown to see the photos posted this week!

A mystery solved by two adventurous doll friends. I like the way the author handles doll characters coming alive when the humans are asleep or absent. A doll oath...hmmmm.

What is Happening in Dolltown?

Silent Sam and Priscilla watch Vikka get things ready for the Daycare photo shoot. Vikka brings a few toys  to amuse the babies.
Priscilla has just discovered that Sam is carrying a baby on his back. And nobody knows!
Well, actually lots of us have figured it out, including Vikka, but we are not telling until Sam says it's okay.
So we asked Priscilla to keep Sam's secret.
But who knows what Priscilla will do...

It was time for a baby photo shoot!
Our Vintages, Darlene and Cindy, are the Caregivers at the Dolltown Daycare.
They brought the little ones to the Play Yard.

There are lots of babies and toddlers in Dolltown, from the tiny Berengeurs the Vintages are holding, to the pretty Marie Osmonds.
It's funny to see them not-grow.
Imagine being a baby forever!

What is Happening in Fashion in Dolltown?

Sometimes we get dolls in Dolltown who never change out of their original outfits.

There are several reasons for this. Sometimes the outfit makes the doll who they are, like our clowns,
And sometimes the outfits are stitched right on their bodies or are difficult to remove.
Or they are perfect just the way they are...

This little Marie Osmond porcelain, who we call Sugar, is still wearing the pretty, sparkly, velvet dress she arrived in (and so is her little friend Rosebud).
(Okay, we took her tights and shoes off...it's too hot!)

And never changing into fresh clothes means that we handle these dolls as little as possible, keeping their outfits as clean as possible!
However in Dolltown, it's more about the stories than the glass cabinet.
We take our chances!

Well, we didn't get a video of the Iple girls posted. Too many steps right now!
But things are looking up! This week the photos are right side up. We don't know if it is going to last, but we are hopeful!
And you wouldn't know it, but the Eiffel Tower model is close to up.
In the meantime, the Dolltown Daycare babies came to the Play Yard for an outing. And our pretty Dee an Cee Vintages, Cindy and Darlene, got them all to sit quietly for some photos. Those Vintages are something!
And our Silent Sam is excited! And not because Priscilla discovered he has a babyon his back! There is a nice surprise to share next week...
Silent Sam has a new friend. And that's all I'm going to say!
What's up next week?
