Besides this doll's hair?
Beautiful new dolls!
Queens of Africa!
I just read a post on Doll Observers, one of my favorite doll blogs, about Queens of Africa...new dolls created by Taofick Okoya.
From Tillie's post... "Nigerian businessman Taofick Okoya created a line of dolls called Queens of Africa. The dolls, which come in a variety of skin tones, fashions and hairstyles, came about after he saw the impact that having white dolls had on his young daughter."
Tillie then links to an article on The Root, with Queens of Africa doll designer Okoya talking to Forbes.
Thanks for the heads up on these dolls, Tillie!

And these dolls are available now!

More outdoor adventures!
Then the girls came in to get dressed for a party...a Facebook group anniversary party.
(We have fun through photos and chat)
Here's Ellowyne Willow, who brought the trunk of dresses. A tuck here, a pin there, and all the Little Darlings were ready for their photos! Then dancing, ice cream, and cake...

Dress up!
The dress up fashions on the Little Darling dolls this week are a combination of Tonner Ellowyne clothes and dresses from individual Ellowyne dressmakers.
Talented dressmakers design and sew beautiful clothes like the cream and brown dress on our little brunette, Rosa.
And blonde Birdy wears an original Tonner dress from Change of Season Lizette.
Robert Tonner's massive doll company clothes their Ellowynes in well made, fashionable outfits. Some outfits can be bought separately.

Pretty Ellowyne shoes were chosen for each outfit. But alas, the fashion doll's foot is more slender... Flats it is girls! Easier to run around in!

Several of these 16" Ellowynes dresses are Tonner fashions.

Dolltowners were enjoying some glorious spring weather this week! Photos and flowers!
But on a rainy day I spent some time looking through old Dolltown photo albums and laughed at photos of Boneka (our wooden and cloth Indonesian doll) arriving in Dolltown.

Those photos made it into a flashback post this week...

Hey! There's Tink with no pigtails!
But it was the Little Darlings who got most of the photo action, again this week!
Last week we mentioned...You-Know-Who is a member of a Facebook group that is celebrating a first year anniversary. The girls were invited!
And the Little Darlings had so much fun dressing up in the Ellowynes' fancy dresses for the Facebook party!
They met some new friends, ate ice cream, twirled in their dresses and didn't want to change back into their own clothes!

Image
Birdy, still in her cream Lizette dress, even hopped in the car a couple of times, and headed off...
...to Art Knapps garden store where she pretended the terrariums were doll display cases.
...and to Daphne's Garden, where she discovered more birdhouses!
And peonies!
Watch for photos on our Gallery.
And a blog post...lots of flower photos with dollies!

I love the Dolls Magazine!
It is fun to read about the doll designers, dressmakers, and current doll events.
There are several doll magazines: Fashion Doll, Art Doll, Doll World.... I love Haute Doll, with its focus on fashion dolls like Integrity and Kingdom dolls, and its fashion forward photo shoots.
But right now,  Dolls  is the only mag I subscribe to.
The Dolls magazine covers a variety of dolls, from OOAKs to playdolls. The photos and articles are lively and well done. There is always something new to learn. Even the doll ads are great!
The current edition, May/June 2016, focuses on "Ball Jointed Beauty" and features Liz Frost, Sophie Louis, Judy Porter, and Henry and Zofia Zawieruszynski. Liz Frost's Ruby, is on the cover (not pictured here). Cute!
The mag reports on the North American International Toy Fair, held in February.
There is also a great article on eye painting by April Norton. One on Ruby Red Galleria's Four Kindergartners. And another on the felt Lenci dolls.
Lenci! Now that's another story!
This magazine is available in hardcopy, with issues arriving every two months. And you can also receive a digital edition if you subscribe for the print version. Or ONLY a digital edition...
Here's the link to the Dolls Magazine site.
You can get past issues!

Outdoor adventures!
The weather has been so good the Little Darlings all got changed to explore in our garden and out in the lane, the best place for a bike ride!
Xennie and Tink were lucky enough to go for a car ride to Aunty M's for a work day, sorting and hauling boxes from one place to another. However! It wasn't long before they escaped the work trailer and headed out to the river, then the big tree...
You girls get away from the river's edge!
Jiyoon and Maggie headed up a tree right here in our garden, where we perch little birdhouses just for fun. With these noisy dolls around, we really don't expect any birds to settle in them. But I don't tell the dollies that. It's too much fun to watch them check inside the little houses to see if a bird family has moved in.

Variety!
Last week I mentioned we were short of skirts for the Little Darlings.
So we used tunics, yoga pants, jeans, and tshirts from a variety of sources, including cute flounce skirts from the bjd girls, so everyone could head out for tree climbing and bike rides!

Wow! Lots of adventures this week! The Little Darlings had so much fun!
Tree climbing, bird watching, lying by the river... Xennia and Tink even had to be rescued by You-Know-Who after they hopped into a wire tree guard!
All the darlings were called back to the house though, to get ready for a party...
You-Know-Who is a member of a Facebook group that is celebrating a first year anniversary. The girls were invited! And they came to don their party frocks only to discover...there weren't any!
Well, not enough, anyway...
So we had a bright idea! We asked Willow, a Dolltown Ellowyne, if we could play dress up with the beautiful Ellowyne fancy dresses!
Oh yes, she said. And before long our little darlings were all dressed ready for the FB party! Fun, fun, fun!

But before we post those cute dressup photos, we want to show you the rest of our outdoor adventure photos...
Birdy and Rosa take the new bike into the lane. And Evie and Conner get our garden horse out and go for a ride!

Social Media!
Hiya Dolly participates in PinterestFlickr,TwitterReddit, and Instagram...
We run a Hiya Dolly Facebook page, and are members of FB three doll groups.
We do our best to keep track of several children's author groups.
Hiya Dolly also contributes photos to Doll Observer and Our Little Darlings, two Ning membership websites.
We enjoy 4 or 5 dolly websites (like Sharon in SpainFashion Doll Stylist, Toy Box Philosopher) and like to comment on their blogs, OR at least read them for fun and info.
We have done our best to get going on Google+ and Tumblr, but it seems to be two too many for me to keep track of. At least for now!
Okay, I am dizzy now, just thinking about all this participation!
And I have to get back to post on Flickr. I am behind!

Our new "South Korean" Little Darling...
This Dianna Effner Little Darling is actually from the US, handpainted by Joyce Matthews.
But I ordered this particular doll so she can be South Korean and so we have more of the world in Dolltown.
Here she is with Grace, one of my South Korean friends and dolly advisor. Grace helped me choose this doll's name...Jiyoon.
Grace laughed at some of my choices, when I googled and compiled a few names for her to advise me on.
Not Ji Jin! No! Sounds like earthquake!
I like the name Jiyoon. And I LOVE this pretty doll!

Here's Jiyoon, a little closer...
She is wearing an outfit from Carolyn Gebert. It includes the striped skirt, tshirt, tights, adorable purse and teddy bear.
And I won it! In a draw!
Lucky draw for me...on one of my facebook groups.
And it wasn't until I decided to dress all my Little Darling girls in skirts for their next photo shoot that I realized how short I am, on dolly skirts! We had to borrow from the bjd's and STILL we ended up with girls in pants and tunic tops. I had to change my "tops and skirts" shoot to a "2 piece outfit" shoot.
So Carolyn, thank you!
For the adorable outfit.
And for at least one-more-skirt the LD's can wear!
Now...there SHOULD be more photos of Jiyoon, real close ups, by the time you get this newsletter. Worth seeing! Of course, I am biased.
AND there SHOULD be a photo of this outfit on Birdy, our little curly haired blonde.
She pounced on it and won, when Jiyoon changed into a flounce skirt for the Tops and Skirts Shoot. I mean the 2 PIECE OUTFIT shoot (awkward!), coming soon on Hiya Dolly!
We CAN'T get more skirts for a while. We have to be thankful for what we have.
The girls need sandals...

You-Know-Who took several photos...of me!
This photo was actually for Instagram, to introduce me, since I don't get onto our site, Hiya Dolly, very often. So far I am only writing this column for this newsletter.
AND I got into several photos on our social media, with those vintage Terri Lees! I am blushing!
I am usually so behind the scenes...
This week there was a slow down in photo taking, while the May dioramas are set up.
While it was slow in Dolltown, I watched some tennis with G.
Tennis in Rome...if only we could go!

BUT! You-Know-Who did take some great photos of Asa as she was changing back into her usual black outfit, ready to get back to her day to day life in Dolltown, keeping all the Dolltowners safe.

Look at these cute Sashas!
These two are newcomers at Sharon's,  the writer of the blog, Sharon in Spain.
Lucky girls, because Sharon, a Sasha lover and expert can wash dolls, repaint dolls, restring dolls, suede their limbs as needed, and clothe the dolls.
I go to Sharon for advice sometimes. And I love her dolly blog, set in Spain with gorgeous photos, not just of her cute variety of dolls, but of landscapes of Spain.
And sometimes of antiques, quilts, and marketplace finds...
Recently I emailed Sharon with a photo of my childrens' Sasha dolls, who recently came out of the attic to be checked, washed, and dressed.
Sure enough, Sharon let me know who she thinks they are, what year, where they are from....
And I will be doing a little more research.
We used to sell Sashas in our book and gift store. They were a great quality doll and had a lovely international look to them! My kids were lucky, I think, to have these as playmates when they were young!
These girls are beauties, Sharon! Give them a hug, from the Dolltowners!

Oralee wore Miley's forever dress to Asa's Open House!

Miley has been wearing the "new" outfit that she got from Santa back in December. Her nautical blue print dress was stored with the Terri Lee clothes. Same sizes, sort of.

Oralee jumped at the chance to wear a dress that matches her bright blue eyes.

Miley loved it on her!

It made her realize how nice her dress really is. So now that she appreciates it anew, maybe she'll wear it again when Oralee changes.

This boy!
During the last shop at Bailey House we found this cute hard vinyl vintage boy. Even though his hair is vinyl, which we don't like much.... we noticed how much he looks like Becky, one of my original vintages. And brought him to Dolltown.
Becky has been a bit of a loner...
She hangs with the teens, but she has a babyface and feels too young.
So then she hangs with the Disney princesses, but feels too tall and awkward.
Sometimes she hangs with the boys but feels they are too short. And they think she is too young even though she is over 50!
So this boy came home with me and Becky is delighted. They have formed a fast friendship...
We had to cut him out of his stitched on outfit, and gave him some boy clothes.
We'll name him soon.

Well, April is done and May has begun...
That means it's time for new adventures!
But before we leave our last adventure behind, look at this!
It's Terri Lee herself! At Asa's!
The Original Vintage!
I have talked about her before...remember? Terri Lees in a basket, in pieces? Terri Lee and Queeny?
But Asa's Open House was so important the New Terri Lee's decided their Vintages had to make an appearance.
Queeny is just a head at the moment! Can anyone say disembodied?
Asa was wonderful with these broken dolls. So kind!
And last week I said, wait till you see the little girls, 12 of them at once! They loved their visit but got rambunctious- crawling, sitting upside down, climbing in the doll stand...
But Asa has magic powers that not only settled the children to a wonderful quiet, but brought a smile to the face of a porcelain doll who's been frowning ever since she was made...
I saw it myself.
Watch for more photos of the fun events at Asa's and on the Bridge...
But the dollies have now been allowed into Dolltown Abbey's beautiful Rose Garden...
May and roses...

The Surprise Doll, 60th Anniversary Edition

by Morrell Gipson

$6.55US Kindle

$12.76US Hardcover

Summary of the book:

For more than half a century children have been captivated with the story of Mary and her dolls. Mary’s father was a sea captain who took long trips across the ocean, bringing back a doll from each journey. Soon Mary had six dolls and wished for a seventh one to become her "Sunday" doll. But Mary’s father said six dolls were enough for any girl, so she set off to visit the Dollmaker and, oh, was she in for a surprise!

From a review:

The book is an excellent quality hard-back edition, whereas my original in childhood was the regular "Little Golden Book" binding. I was so glad to find the 60th anniversary edition so that I can share it with the young children in my extended family.

Incidentally, having this book as a child led to my interest in geography and having social studies courses as favorite subjects in school.

Babushka's Doll

by Patricia Polacco

$13.88 Kindle

$8.99 Paperback

$16.95 Hardcover

From the Summary:

Natasha isn't really a bad girl. It's just that she wants to play on the swing now, not after the wash has been hung up to dry. And she wants her soup now, not after the goats have been fed. Looking after Natasha keeps Babushka, Natasha's grandmother, very busy.
Then, after lunch, Natasha notices a doll sitting on Babushka's shelf...a doll Babushka tells Natasha she played with just once when she was a little girl. When Natasha plays with the doll while Babushka goes to the store for groceries, she discovers why once is enough with Babushka's doll...and finds out just how tiring it can be to take care of a child who wants everything now.

From a review:

Babushka's Doll is one of my favorite Patricia Polacco books. As an elementary school teacher, I love to read a loud to the children every day. The children love this book. It is a pedagogical story of a girl who acts impatient and selfish with her grandma, her "Babushka", and the lesson she learns in this dimension. It is a multicultural tale, and it is very easy to be dramatic and use character voices when telling the story. I have read this story hundreds of times. Enjoy it! It is a gem in your home or classroom library.
